Pip Woods was introduced to clay whilst studying psychology at university over 20 years ago. She retained the passion and continued to practice but her career took her in other directions, most recently working in adolescent mental health. Now, a full time ceramicist, Pip’s work is still influenced by her curiosity and observations of the human condition. She has participated in exhibitions in NZ and Sydney, and was a finalist in the NZ Portage Ceramic Awards in 2018.
“This collection of vessels includes the Tall and Bow jugs. I play with the form or ‘posture’ to suggest human character. The height, straight line, and raised spout of the Tall jug conjure dignity, serenity pride, purpose.
The tilted head and leaning posture of the Bow jug evoke meanings attributed to the bowed head across cultures: reverence, submission, reflection, prayer, sadness, grief.
I was also inspired by the haunting images of the handmaids in the television drama, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the memories of the Catholic nuns who taught me at school. The names of the jugs in this series are a “nod” to those nuns from my childhood and some more well known.
The Alien Family is a representation of a migrant or refugee family, often referred to as ‘aliens’ – a dehumanising term which reinforces difference and ‘other-ness’”.
NB: The Curvy Alien and Baby Alien will be purchased together because we do not believe in separating children from their mothers. Profit from this sale will be donated to International Rescue Committee, a refugee assistance charity.
